Becky, welcome to the site. We're all soiling ourselves just as much as you are. IT'S SO AWESOME!!!
-
About that whole anime discussion:
I basically have the same views as Halvor on this. I used to be a huge fan of manga and anime, but there came a day when it all just stopped holding my interest, because I already knew exactly what was going to happen. The different genres fall into one or two story formulas each. DBZ, Naruto, and Bleach are all the same show.
-
And lately, I've even found that some anime that people call masterpieces falls flat for me. Akira felt disjointed and plot points were just sort of thrown out there without any buildup or explanation. Ghost in the Shell was too short, and overly symbolic without actually making anyone care about the philosophical musings it contained.
-
I've found that many of the fans of action animes, for example, can boil their fandom down to thinking that something looks cool or having a crush on one of the characters. My high school English teacher, the teacher I respect most out of any I've ever had, was pretty much forced one time by some of his students to read the first few issues of D-Gray Man or however it's spelled. I was talking to him about it later (I had never read it and still haven't) and he said something along the lines of "It was awful. It's like the author ran out of ideas every few pages, and in order to keep the story on life support, he made the main character's weapon bigger and more menacing. The plot was almost nonexistent. Just Deus ex Machina after Deus ex Machina." And my God, do you know about the latest plot development in Naruto?
-
SPOILER ALERT
-
Naruto, after fighting the Big Bad Guy(TM) (the head of the Akatsuki), convinces him to turn good, and the Big Bad Guy casts a magic spell (jutsu, whatever) that BRINGS ALL THE DEAD PEOPLE IN THE STORY BACK TO LIFE. Massive cop-out.
-
END SPOILER
-
And trust me, the other genres are no better (I'm looking at you, Love Hina).
-
It seems to me that manga and anime boils down to something that offers pleasing visuals, but when you get down to it, 99.999% of the stuff out there is done by hack writers who can't tell a decent, well-thought out story that doesn't involve old, outdated gender stereotypes, massive, melodramatic scenes where two guys compare penis size through giant swords or muscles or guns or robots or WHATEVER, and overly dramatic speeches about the nature of light and shadow (or whatever the philisophical topic of the week is) that nobody really understands or cares about, but the fanboys and fangirls gush about how DEEP and SYMBOLIC it is (See Evangelion or Eureka Seven). And much of the legitimately written stuff (like Miyazaki, the master himself) can get lost in translation between Japan and America.
-
99% of manga and anime is colorful crap, just like 99% of American comics and cartoons are colorful crap.

So amazing! I remember reading Myst for the first time when I was 8 or 9 years old, coinciding with my complete and utter inability to get anywhere in the game on my old PowerMac. So many years later now, my boyfriend and I are enjoying reading the three books out loud and playing the game on our iPods.

This is the first I've heard of a possible movie - incredible! We always talk about how amazing it would be for a Myst movie to be made, we didn't know how far along the process it already was!

Congratulations to the whole team! I've been a fan for a long time, and I'm SO glad you're still immersed in the world that never ceases to amaze me!

@ Patrick- You forgot to quote Micam on his remarks about your firework selections "FIREWORKS ROCK!!!" but it was way better in person with his jumping up and down looking like his eyeballs were going to pop out.

@ Jill - Try a week and a half long sleepover! I'm just now starting to be able to function again, I think I need more Blondie's cookies. We had a really great time and I sent you the link to the photos yesterday.

I don't think I quoted it from a source. They're my words, I just put them in quotes to suggest they were the "message" from the book. Sorry to confuse you. Maybe they do come from somewhere, but if so, I've forgotten where.

I think it's more interesting how none of the characters are inherently good or evil. They all exhibit their own sense of ethics based on their set of circumstances going on in their lives, but all of the characters truly believe they are doing the "right" thing. I find that makes all of the characters multi-dimensional and remind me a lot of Hamlet. In my opinion, that's the most important point to the entire story of Myst. "There is no good or evil people, we are all trying to just do our part the best way we know how."

A few observations I've made during my brief, repeated voyages into the netherworld called anime and manga (hereafter just anime):

- All anime are weird. Some are really weird - eye-gouging weird...

- Some anime are quite good, even really good. Most of it is really bad. Anime is just like any other genre of entertainment or art. I cannot stand people who think all anime are good just because they are anime... Just because something is made in Japan doesn't make it cool ;)

- Much of its appeal here in the West is due to the fact that it is somewhat different than what we are used to.

- Many anime are really good at setting moods and playing with contrasts, camera angels and other such stylistic features. That kind of expressionist artsy stuff hasn't really been done all that much in Western cinema lately; mainstream Hollywood has been more marked by visual realism the last few decades (with some notable exceptions of course). The last few years have seen some change in this though: Matrix, Kill Bill (both coincidently influenced by anime), Sin city, 300, and Watchmen. Hm, maybe this trend is all just a reaction to the way entertainment/art has been lately, like expressionism was a reaction to realism and impressionism? Art goes in cycles, I guess...

However, not all elements of the anime that do this are as good. I'm starting to hate anime characters for instance. They are just so bland - and not in a cool way meant to highlight a nihilist statement on individuality - they are just bland, uninteresting, featureless and uninspiring for no other reason than lazy creators. :P I used to think they looked cool, but that feeling waned... Can anyone even remember what a given anime character looks like? When you've watched enough anime, all the characters just become copies of each other (at least within the same styles of anime). In the end all that is really different is the shape and colour of their hair. It gets old... Even when it comes to personality they are just a variation on a few stock characters. I still watch some anime if a friend sends it to me, which they do from time to time, but for me most of the novelty has worn off. (no offense to rabbid fans!)

(and nevermind anime eyes, what the heek is up with those noses? :S )

In the book, I loved reading about how Aitrus's and Veovis's relationships went from an intense friendship to heated enemies all because of Anna. it shows how just one factor can split up any kind of relashionship, no matter how strong. I loved reading about it because I could just feel and imagine how it all played out in D'ni. And then, I loved how it eventually lead to the destruction of D'ni (I knew it was coming, I just loved how it all tied together naturally). It was a masterpiece.... And probably one of the main reasons i loved the story in the first place; myst aside (and that's saying something!)
-
but as far as worrying whether or not the people will recieve that undertone, i don't think you need to worry. As long as it is protrayed correctly (and I know you will), it will be fantastic! Besides, I don't think the story would flow as well without it.

I think this question of the nature of the relationship between Veovis and Aitrus is really interesting. I feel totally vindicated right now. It has always been our intention to explore the motives behind Veovis' attachment and extreme pain when Aitrus "sides" with Anna. What you are presenting here is very much what our notion has always been.
_
In the script, I rooted this particular dynamic in what is called a "homosocial" relationship in literature. There is a clear example of it in Chaucer's "The Knight's Tale" (Thanks, Sandy for your paper that defined this clearly in my head). This now seems to have been reduced to the stupid term of "bromance".
_
I'm really pleased that some of you have picked up on this undertone, as it is very present in the script, and I was admittedly a little worried about how it would be received.

I would rather so much happens that you cannot describe all of it than so little happens that you have time to explain everything in painstaking detail. Of course, I cannot be glad that things are going as I would rather unless you tell me they are, so I thank you. If only Cyan would tell me if I should be glad on the Uru Live site.

@ Magic88889 - As a Myst fan I abhor the implication that we are inherently crazy. I am certainly not, and if you don't believe me, just ask the rhesus macaque sitting on my shoulder. Be warned though, he only understands betelgeusian and he has an unfortunate penchant for quoting scripture.

Yali; You evil liar!!!! I tried looking for chibi Atrus and Gehns and Saveedros, etc but found nothing T.T Makes me want to glare at you... where ever you are! (not really)
With everyone ragging on anime: it's like being sucker punch in the XXX... Let's just agree that it takes special people to truly appreciate the finer points of anime- kind of like wine tasting or drugs usage. One might like anime every now and then (the wine taster) and some might need it the way they need weed.
Hm, but what would be a good replacement topic... The weather's nice ;-)
